Maximus VII Ranger: how to switch between front audio and rear audio?

For general entertainment I have a 2.0 speakerset connected to the rear audio output and my headset for simming is connected to the front audio output. How do I easily switch between the output through witch I want to receive the audio? Right now I'm constantly unplugging the headset if I'm not simming and I was hoping there is an easy software solution where I can simply hit a button?

Also, is it possible to have the rear audio output and front audio output show up as two different audio devices in Windows (8.1)? Both my speakers and headset use 3.5mm jacks, no digital devices or whatsoever.

    Hello JayPee

On the bottom right hand side of your screen right click on the speaker, then click playback devices, there you should be able to select which one you want to use.

That's the point.. Both outputs (front and rear) show up in Windows device manager as one playback device. The only other playback device is the digital output.

Having to unplug your front audio to get rear audio working is the default behavior of Realtek's drivers.
    • You can switch it by finding the Realtek CPL in Windows Control Panel or by typing "RTSnMg64.cpl" in Windows search (Should be in \Windows\System32) and opening it.
    • Then find the Settings button (it should be a picture of a gear) and then choose either play audio through front and rear at the same time or show all inputs as separate devices in the sound control panel.
    • After you have that set you can switch inputs (Set Default Input) using the Sound control panel.

Sorry for not being more detailed as I don't have Realtek's drivers installed at the moment, I'm just using Windows bundled HDA drivers (Which is another option you can try).

Ok, thank you so far. Could you point me to those bundled HDA drivers?

    EDIT:

That setting did it. Now I have the AC97 device for the rear output, and the HD audio device for the front output. So there I have my two seperate devices for easy toggling between speakers and headset.

    EDIT2:

Is there a fast and convenient way to switch between speakers and headset as primary audio device? I know it can be done via Windows but it's rather tedious because you need to left and right click thru several menus. I was hoping there is a sort of one-button-solution from within the ASUS panel perhaps?
